European Commission relief for farmers

 Bhubaneswar, April 19: In a bid to check the farmer suicides in Odisha, the European Commission (EC) has extended support farmers with modern farming techniques. In the first phase, the EC will undertake a pilot project in five villages in Daspalla block in Nayagarh district.

The development came after Jeevan Rekha Parishad (JRP) gave a report to the EC highlighting the farmer suicide cases in the State. It has also prepared a project report and gave the same to the Commission for execution. The project will be executed from next month, sources said.

According to JRP, initially, the European Commission will provide Rs 3 lakh for the project in the first phase. Under the project, modern farming techniques will be given to farmers with the help of local agriculture officers and experts.

Focus will also be given on quality seeds, marketing facility of products and also easy available of agriculture machineries.

Sources in the JRP said since Daspalla area is known for vegetable cultivation, efforts will also be taken to transport the vegetables to prime selling centres especially the markets in Bhubaneswar.
