Agartala, Mar 4: As many as 23 tribals from Chittagong Hill Tract (CHT) of neighbouring Bangladesh, including nine women and three children, have been nabbed from Gandacherra in Tripura’s Dhalai district on the charge of illegal trespassing, the police said on Thursday.
They were moving in Indian territory without passport or any kind of valid document. Police arrested them on the basis of intelligence inputs Thursday morning and produced before a local court, which remanded them judicial custody for five days.
The three children were sent to a juvenile home, a senior police official said.
Gandacherra subdivision has a long border with the CHT and tribal people of the same community dwell on both sides of the border and share same language and culture.
During interrogation, the tribals stated they crossed over the border for treatment by tribal priests, the police said.
One arrested person, however, told the police that 43 Bangladeshi tribals had entered into Indian side for the same cause and have managed to give the police a slip.
The Police were now trying to track down the other illegal entrants.
