Cuttack, Jan 14: Today the Commissionerate Police brought to limelight a cyber crime racket and held five members including two staff of BSNL. This was informed by DCP Sanjeev Arora to the media. He stated that the police had received a report on cyber crime happening in Market Nagar area where some miscreants managed to hack the password and username of an account and withdrew Rs 24 lakh by obtaining the OTP (one-time password) number from the SIM card of the original owner through a duplicate mobile SIM card. Additionally, he said that out of the five arrested, three were from Kolkata and they have been bought here on transit remand. Upon interrogation, they would be arrested today. The remaining two persons who are the employees of BSNL’s Salepur telecom division have also been arrested. He said that during the course of the investigation, it was found that the two BSNL employees had violated the guidelines in the issuance of duplicate SIM cards and provided the SIM card to the prime accused in the name of other person other than the original SIM card owner. Finding their complicity in this fraudulent act, these two employees got arrested. He also said that the three accused, arrested from Kolkata are veteran criminals and several such cases are pending against them in different PS including Odisha. They are mostly involved in such cases in Jharkhand and Rajasthan. The cops are still on the hunt to nab another one or two accused in the case, for which special teams have been formed.
