Japan Detects First Case Of Mutated N501S Delta Variant

In another case of Coronavirus mutation, some Japanese researchers have discovered a new mutation of the COVID-19 Delta variant in the country on Tuesday.

Led by Associate professor Hiroaki Takeuchi at the Tokyo Medical and Dental University Hospital, the research team have revealed that the variation was first discovered in a patient who visited the centre earlier this month. According to reports, Genetic analysis has revealed the N501S and yet 8 cases of the same has been found outside Japan.

The N501S mutation is similar to the N501Y variation of the Alpha variant, first detected in the UK, says reports. However, the impact of the new variant on virus transmissibility is yet uncertain. Study on the same is underway.
