August 09

The Shia Sect of Muslim communities observes the first month of the Islamic calendar, Muharram as the second holiest month after Ramadan. It is one of the four sacred months where any form of warfare is forbidden, and sacred mourning is observed by the followers of Imam Husayn (Hussain), the grandson of Prophet Mohammed.

The tenth day of Muharram is known as Ashura (which is also known as ten in Arabic) and is observed as strict remembrance of the supreme sacrifice made by Imam Husayn (Hussain) and his 72 followers in the Battle of Karbala against Yazid I, who was the second Caliph of the Umayyad Caliphate.

Muharram is considered the month of Allah, and the Day of Ashura is celebrated by all followers of Islam especially the Shia Sect who take out massive processions mourning the great loss and giving pain to themselves by lashing themselves with chains and sharp objects meanwhile Muslims of Sunni Sect, observe the day by fasting.

The Prime Minister Narendra Modi has recalled the sacrifices of Hazrat Imam Hussain (AS) on the day of Ashura and said that he is remembered for his unwavering commitment to truth and his fight against injustice.

In a tweet, the Prime Minister said;

“Today is a day to recall the sacrifices of Hazrat Imam Hussain (AS). He is remembered for his unwavering commitment to truth and his fight against injustice. He also placed great importance on equality and brotherhood.”
