AIIMS introduces 35 cancer wards today

Bhubaneswar, July 16: On observing its fourth foundation day on Friday, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Bhubaneswar will introduce its 35-bed surgical oncology ward on Saturday to provide indoor facilities to more cancer patients in the coming days. The AIIMS director, AK Mohapatra informed that the union minister of state for health, Faggan Singh Kulaste will inaugurate the ward.

The AIIMS has three departments for cancer patients – medical oncology, surgical oncology and radiation oncology. Total five senior doctors are in these departments. These departments are equipped with modern technology to treat the patients.

Mohapatra said the institute has started PG (MD/MS) courses in eight pre and Para medical subjects this year. BSc in medical technology in imaging and therapy course has also been started at AIIMS, Bhubaneswar, he added. The AIIMS started four new operation theatres in the trauma centre on June 15 taking the number to OTs to eight. It has also started executive health check-up and integrated counselling for people with HIV.

Prof Madhabananda Kar, head of surgical oncology department, said his team has already operated on 55 to 60 cancer patients during the last two months. Almost all major surgeries in oncology will be performed here. On the occasion of the foundation day, an ultramodern digital subtraction angiography (DSA) lab was inaugurated for sophisticated test of patients. On the first day, MRI tests of five persons were conducted in the lab, the sources said.
