Koraput, Aug 30: In yet another incident that questions the government’s various schemes meant for pregnant woman and infants, a 30-year old woman delivered a baby in an auto rickshaw in which she reached Umerkote hospital in Nabarangpur district on Monday as the ‘102’ ambulance didn’t turn up to reach the patient in time.
Unfortunately, the infant died before she and her mother could be shifted to the hospital for treatment.
According to hospital sources, the family of the patient Jamuna Bhatra of Challanguda village, contacted ‘102’ ambulance to shift her to Umerkote Hospital when she felt labour pain around 9 am on Monday. However, after waiting for more than two hours, the ambulance didn’t turn up.
Left with no other choice, they took an auto rickshaw to reach the hospital, which is 15 km from the village and reached the hospital at around 12.30pm. But before they could shift Jamuna inside the hospital, she delivered a girl child in the auto rickshaw. However, the infant died after few minutes.
Alleging poor ambulance service and demanding adequate financial compensation to the affected family, locals staged dharna at the hospital.
Later, the agitators called off the stir after 2 hours when the district administration provided Rs 10,000 from the Red Cross fund and assured an inquiry as to why the ambulance did not turn up to reach the patient in time.
