Anti-liquor agitation in Sambalpur

SAMBALPUR, JAN. 12 : Over 500 persons, including Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders were taken into custody by the district police while they were holding a demonstration seeking closure of country liquor manufacturing units at Kendughati area under Jayantpur gram panchayat here on Monday.

A rally was held by the protestors from Nelson Mandela Chhak in the city which concluded in front of the Collectorate, where a demonstration was staged.

Latter the protestors demanded to submit a memorandum to the Additional District Collector regarding the matter. However, Sambalpur Sub-Collector went to the spot receive the memorandum. The demonstrators refused to submit the memorandum which led to a heated argument.

Members of various SHGs and Mahila Samities have lent their support to the demand of the villages.
“It is really unfortunate that the district administration has little interest to resolve the issue. We demand closure of the country liquor manufacturing unit-cum-depot in Jayantpur area. We have provided ten days to the administration. However, if our problem remains unsolved, we will block NH- 6 and administration should remain prepared for the consequences”, warned BJP Mahila Morcha State General Secretary, Sabita Nanda.

BJP National Secretary, Suresh Pujari along with Govind Agrawal and many leaders were present at the demonstration site. Pujari said BJP stands with the villagers supporting the noble cause and fight against liquor addiction.
