Angul, Sept 10: To pay condolence to the people who lost their lives in the bus accident on Friday in Angul, locals and College Students’ Association on Saturday called for Athamalik bandh and demanded Rs 5 lakh as compensation for each deceased family, arrest of the bus driver and the RTO who gave fitness certificate to the vehicle, and plying of new buses in Athmallik-Boudh route. The members of the association also conducted a condolence meeting for the deceased.
As per sources, the protestors staged road blockade by burning tyres at many places.
Educational institutions, business establishments and shops were observed to be closed in the city, while vehicular movement was also prohibited during the bandh.
Notably, on Friday, in a road mishap near Deulijhari in Angul district, atleast 21 were killed and around 30 others are stated to be critical when a Boudh to Athamallik bus carrying them fell off a bridge at Puruna Manitri.
Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik expressed sorrow and had directed the police personnel and district administration to take quick steps for the treatment of the injured and had also announced that the medical treatment would be provided free of cost. He also announced the compensation of Rs 2 lakh to the kin of each deceased.
