KOLKATA, SEPT 20: Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president Jagmohan Dalmiya, who was admitted to a city hospital here hospital few days back following cardiac problem, passed away this evening following a massive heart attack. He was 75.
Dalmia is survived by his wife Chadralekha, daughter Vaishali and son Abhishek.
Dalmiya was admitted to B M Birla Hospital on Thursday night after he complained of chest pain. Doctors performed coronary angiography on him and his condition was stable.
“Mr. Dalmiya died of internal gastrointestinal bleeding and internal organ failure,” hospital sources said.
The condition of the veteran cricket administrator deteriorated at about 6 PM and he suffered a massive cardiac arrest from which he could not recover, Cricket Association of Bengal sources said.
Dalmiya’s death plunged the cricket fraternity into a grief as reactions poured in from former cricketers and administrators condoling his demise.
BCCI condoled the demise of its president and said the cricketing fraternity will miss the veteran administrator of the game dearly.
“On behalf of all the members of BCCI, I wish to submit our condolences to the bereaved family of Mr. Dalmiya. As a visionary and a father figure of Indian cricket, Mr. Dalmiya worked towards the development of the game of cricket in India. The cricketing fraternity will miss him dearly,” BCCI secretary Anurag Thakur said in a statement.
Odisha Cricket Association (OCA) too condoled the death of Dalmia.
“We are so shocked to hear the news of the sad demise of Jagmohan Dalmiya, President, BCCI. “Jagu Da”, as he was affectionately addressed by the cricketing community was an institution. It was during his long and eventful stint as President of BCCI & ICC that the sport returned to the country in a big way. He was a self effacing individual who always put the sport and Indian cricket in particular above everything else,” OCA Secretary Asirbad Behera said adding that “Jagu Da” was responsible for transferring the game of cricket from a class game to mass game.
Dalmiya took over the reins of the BCCI for a second time in March, after a gap of 10 years, when he got a walkover in the elections. But he has been ailing since then, and his health has deteriorated further over the last few weeks.
