Bhubaneswar, Dec 15: For the smooth conduct of the crocodile census, the Bhitarkanika National Park would be closed to tourists from January 8 to 17. The forest authorities have decided to impose the nine-day ban on the entry of tourists in view of the annual census of salt water crocodiles.
The restriction would help prevent noise pollution during the counting of the reptiles.Since the presence of large number of visitors as well as plying of motor boats would disturb the operation, the authorities have decided to impose the ban.
The head count drive of the crocodiles would be conducted under the supervision of wildlife personnel.
Last year, 1665 salt water crocodiles, including 511 hatchlings, 380 yearlings, 317 juveniles, 149 sub-adults, 305 adults and three giant crocodiles measuring more than 20 feet were spotted.
