Bhubaneswar: May 30: Biju Janata Dal Candidates filed their nomination papers on Monday before Assembly Secretary Amiya Kumar Sarangi, the returning officer, in presence of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik. Prasanna Acharya filed the nomination papers first, followed by Bishnu Charan Das and N Bhaskar Rao. Each candidate submitted two sets of papers having 10 proposers.
With 117 members in the house, BJD has more than the 37 preference votes that it needs to win each of the three seats. So, election of three candidates of the Dal to the Upper House is formality now.
The last date for recording of selection is May 31 and scrutiny of nomination papers will occur on june 1. The election will be held on June 11 and counting of votes will be held on the same day, said returning officer Amiya Sarangi
Notably, Election to the upper house will be held for three Rajya Sabha seats falling vacant on july 1. The seats fell vacant as the tenure of Pyari Mohan Mohapatra, Bhupinder Singh, Baishnab Charan Parida ending on july 1.
