BJD seeks president intervene over Polavaram issue

Bhubaneswar, Dec 11: BJD MLAs along with ministers today held a Padayatra from Assembly to the Governor House on the controversial Polavaram project.

The members shouted slogans with holding placards in hands reached the Governor House and submitted a memorandum to the Governor addressed to President seeking his intervention on the issue.

The protest was also seen in the Assembly today.

As the question hour began, BJD MLAs rushed to the well of the House and shouted slogans against the Polavaram project.

The members opposed the Centre’s decision of the multipurpose irrigation project in Andhra Pradesh which is feared to inundate several tribal villages in Odisha. Unable to run the house, Speaker Niranjan Pujhari adjourned the House till 3 pm.

Notably, the cost estimate of Polavaram project was fixed at Rs 16010.45 crore of which the Andhra Pradesh government has already spent Rs 5135.87 crore. The remaining Rs 10874.58 crore will be provided by the Centre.

The two states have objected to the clearances granted to the dam, declared a national project, and have petitioned the Supreme Court
