12 people died and 40 people are still missing after a boat carrying tourists capsized in the Godavari River. The boat was carrying 61 passengers and out of them 50 were tourists who had gone to see Papikondalu hills near the Godavari River.
The accident took place near Kacchuluru village in Devipatnam Mandal of the East Godavari district.
NDRF teams from Vishakhapatnam and Guntur have been mobilised.
Almost all of these in the boat had access to life jackets.
Some of them reportedly swam to the bank.
Chief Minister YS Jaganmohan Reddy asked the officials to take rescue operations immediately and announced a financial assistance of Rs 10 lakh.
Expressing sadness over the incident, PM Narendra Modi tweeted, “Extremely pained by the capsizing of a boat in Andhra Pradesh’s East Godavari. My thoughts are with the bereaved families. Rescue operations are currently underway at the site of the tragedy.”
