Berhampur, Aug 12: The police arrested a couple in Goutami village under Digapahandi block in Ganjam district yesterday on charges of murdering their 18-year old daughter. In what appears to be a case of honour killing, the couple killed the girl after she refused to marry the person of their choice and insisted on marrying the man of her choice.
The couple identified as Runu Jena (45) and Saura Jena (52) have confessed to the police their role in the murder of their daughter Santhosini on August 1, as she refused to end her affair with her lover even after being engaged to another person.
According to police, it was the mother who killed the girl while the father dumped the body in a village canal. Apparently, the girl was beaten up to death with a piece of wood after which the parents chopped her body before throwing the body parts into the canal.
Notably, the body of the young girl was found on August 4, at Kaukhata, three kilometres away from the village.
