Child trafficking case at SCB in Cuttack, Odisha: orders given to get DNA test done of babies and couples

Cuttack, Mar 14:In connection to the child theft incident that happened at the SCB Medical College and Hospital recently, today the Commissionerate Police has directed the hospital authorities to get a DNA paternity test done of the two newborns along with the two couples. According to the statement of a senior police officer, once the DNA tests are conducted, the two newborns would be handed over to their respective biological parents.

Notably, on Jan 5 and Mar 8, two newborns each on one day were stolen by a lady from the SCB hospital follwing which the local Mangalabag police held Manasi Samal of Nima Sahi in custody along with three others who had purchased the newborns from her on Mar 12. The prime convict, Manasi posing to be an ASHA worker had stolen a day-old male child of Puspa Patra on the pretext of taking the baby to vaccination centre located near the department for immunization on Mar 8. She allegedly sold the newborn to Sumati Samal of Baranga for nearly Rs 10,500. But after a detailed investigation based on a CCTV footage of the hospital, the baby was recovered. A photo of the woman was also released by Commissionerate police seeking information from general public.
