Bhubaneswar, Jan 9: Union Minister of State for Finance Jayant Sinha on Friday said that the recalcitrant attitude of main opposition Congress is seriously impacting the economic growth of the nation.

The bid of the Congress to stall proceedings in the Rajya Sabha for two successive sessions—Monsoon and winter—of the parliament has seriously affected the prospect of the Goods and Services Tax Amendment Bill getting passed in the Parliament despite all efforts of the Union government to convince the Party for its passage.

“Parliamentary Affairs Minister Venkaiah Naidu tried to convince the former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress President Sonia Gandhi about the Bill. But it has not yielded any result,” said Sinha.

The Bill when passed will help business, industry and even the common man. But an adamant Congress is trying to scuttle its passage on some pretext or the other, Sinha lamented.

The Minister, in reply to a question whether Congress was following the footsteps of the NDA during UPA regime, Sinha said the protests of NDA then was on issues which were of national importance and concerned the nation’s economy.

Statutory bodies had pointed out irregularities in mining and spectrum lease causing the national exchequer whooping loss and the NDA wanted a Joint Parliamentary Committee to probe those.

The NDA was forced to stall the business because the UPA was ready for it.

“It’s like comparing an apple with an orange,” Sinha said.

The congress has stalled the government effort to take the country on the path of recovery of the economy, Sinha lamented adding, “it was a great blow to Indian democracy.”
