Dacoit Attempt Foiled

Balasore: The case dates back to 24.8.2024, when the Town Police Station raided an abandoned house near Balighat, where the accused were planning an armed dacoity and apprehended six armed criminals during a late-night raid at Balighat on 23/24 .8.2024. Acting on a credible intelligence input, a police team led by SI Pravakar Sahoo conducted the operation, recovering deadly weapons, country-made bombs and six stolen motorcycles from the accused persons at the spot.

The arrested individuals were identified as Babu Chhua @ Suresh Kumar Jena, Bhabendra Das @ Paglu, Deepak Das also three CICLs apprehended in this case namely Kanha @ Prasanjit Behera, Sk Habib, and Dhiraj Kumar Behera @ Dada. Upon interrogation, they confessed to planning a dacoity in Barabati and using stolen motorcycles for their crimes. Their plans were successfully disrupted by the timely police intervention.

Following a thorough investigation by IO SI S Mishra of Town PS another eleven number of stolen motorcycles were seized from the conscious possession of accused persons and all these motorcycles were handed over to the rightful owners after verifying the documents. The accused were arrested and forwarded to the Hon’ble Court. During the trial, the defence questioned the credibility of police witnesses, but the court upheld the prosecution’s case based on strong evidence, including the seizure of incriminating materials.

The honourable Judge Biswajit Das of Balasore OPID Court delivered a landmark judgment under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), has sentenced three members of a dacoity gang members namely Babu Chhua @ Suresh Kumar Jena, Bhabendra Das @ Paglu, Deepak Das to seven years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of ₹17,000 each. In case of non-payment, they will have to serve an additional 17 months of imprisonment the verdict based on the testimony of seven witnesses and 30 documentary evidences This is the first conviction under the BNS in Balasore District.

In this case, SI Suvendu Mishra of Town Police Station was the investigating officer, while the prosecution was conducted by special Public Prosecutor Shri Pranab Kumar Panda on behalf of the government.
