Bhubaneswar, Sept 6: An elderly 85-year old woman named Sunadei Mohanty of Kanthapolia was rescued by the Dhenkanal district administration on Monday from her house in Dhenkanal town where she was found lying on the verandah of the house with her legs and hands tied.

According to the neighbours, Kanchan Mohanty, daughter-in-law of Sunadei, tortured her mother-in-law by tying her hands and legs.

However, denying this, Kanchan said that since Sunadei had lost mental balance, she was urinating and excreting inside the house and pasting it on the gates and floor for past few days. Thus, she had to tie her hands on Monday to stop her from doing that.

Additional Tehsildar Saroj Panda along with police had reached the spot when they received the information from the neighbours. They found the woman in the verandah of the house and admitted her to the district headquarters hospital at Dhenkanal where she is undergoing treatment. For proper care, Sunadei will be handed over to an old age, the Additional Tehsildar said. He further added that a report would be submitted to the district collector after an inquiry into the matter is done.
