H5N1 virus in birds; culling process starts in Keranga in Khurda district, Odisha

Khurdha, Dec 27: After the detection of bird flu in the area, 10 rapid response teams have started culling operation of chickens at Keranga village, here. The operation will be continued for three days to disinfect the area and as many as 2000 chickens will be culled and will buried in a huge pit.

Bhopal’s High Security Animal Disease Laboratory had sent a report about the presence of H5N1 virus in the area to the Fisheries and Animal Resources Development department, to which the district collector ordered to cull the birds. On Dec 19 some sample of dead birds were sent to the Bhopal Laboratory which came out to be positive.

However, the culling process was opposed by the villagers and they demanded to kill the bird first which are in firm. Following the opposition by the villagers, sub collector and senior police officials arrived at the spot and took the situation under control.
