Hunger strike called off by Gunupur jail inmates on fourth day of protest

Koraput, Aug 11: After protesting against the quality of food served in the jail and demanding removal of jail superintendent Hemant Kumar Sethi, the jail inmates called off their strike on the fourth day on Wednesday when the district administration and jail authorities assured them to look into their demands. Around 87 under trials had stopped taking cooked food served by the jail authorities since Sunday.

The health conditions of five inmates had deteriorated and were shifted to Gunupur hospital on Tuesday which caught the attention of the district administration. Their condition is stated to be stable now.

Gopabandhu Mallick, DIG (Prisons), Berhampur range, had rushed to Gunupur on Tuesday and had spoken to the jail inmates on this matter. He later said that the inmates have called off their strike and the concerned authorities have been directed to maintain the quality of the food served. The higher authorities will also be informed regarding the demands placed by the inmates.
