Japanese Encephalitis: 4 more deaths, toll rises to 38

Malkangiri, Oct 6: The fear of Japanese Encephalitis has grasped Malkangiri to such an extent that four more children have died on Wednesday night. With this the number of deceased has gone up to 38 in just 28 days. As per the information, while undergoing treatment at district headquarters hospital, four children died.

On Wednesday, demanding compensation of Rs 5 lakh for the kin of the deceased and ex-gratia for the already dead children, Pradeep Majhi, former MP of Nabarangpur and Congress leader staged dharana in front of the district Collector’s office carrying the corpse of two kids. And also said that the agitation will continue till the vaccination is administered in Malkangiri, Majhi Further said.

Taking suo motu cognizance of the media report on the death of 33 children due to Japanese Encephalitis in Malkangiri district, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Tuesday served notice on the Malkangiri Collector and State Health & Family Welfare secretary thus asking them to submit a detailed report laying down the steps which are been taken by them, within four weeks.
