Justice Surya Kant Takes Oath As 53rd Chief Justice Of The Supreme Court Of India

Delhi: November 24:

At a ceremony held today (November 24, 2025) at 1000 hrs in the Ganatantra Mandap, Rashtrapati Bhavan, Justice Surya Kant was sworn in as the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of India. He made and subscribed to the oath of office before the President.

Justice Surya Kant, who was part of several landmark judgments, including Article 370 and the Bihar electoral rolls, took oath as the 53rd Chief Justice of India on Monday.
Justice Kant was appointed as the next CJI on October 30 and will serve until February 9, 2027, when he turns 65.
Vice President C P Radhakrishnan and Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended the ceremony, along with other senior leaders.
Born on February 10, 1962, in Hisar district of Haryana to a middle-class family, Justice Kant went from being a small-town lawyer to the country’s highest judicial office, where he has been part of several verdicts and orders of national importance and constitutional matters.
Justice Kant delivered notable judgments in the Punjab and Haryana HC before becoming the chief justice of the Himachal Pradesh HC in October 2018.
The judge was part of the recent presidential reference on the powers of the Governor and President in dealing with bills passed by a state assembly.
Justice Kant also urged the Election Commission to reveal information on 65 lakh voters excluded from Bihar’s draft electoral rolls, during hearings on petitions challenging the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list in the state.
