Ahmedabad, Jan 22: Mrinalini Sarabhai, legendary dancer and wife of Indian physicist Vikram Sarabhai, died in Ahmedabad on Thursday.
According to reports, the 97-year-old Padma Bhushan awardee died at 10 am at her home.
Sarabhai, was admitted to a city hospital on Wednesday after she fell ill with old-age related problems.
“She had an infection which led to her health deteriorating,” Kartikeya Sarabhai, Mrinalini’s son and founder of Centre of Environment Education (CEE), said.
Hailing from Kerala, Sarabhai was trained in Bharatanatyam and Kathakali. Sarabhai was the founder director of Ahmedabad-based dance school called Darpana Academy of Performing Arts.
Her daughter Mallika Sarabhai is also a reputed dancer and an activist. Her elder sister Lakshmi Sehgal was a freedom fighter and commander-in-chief of Subhas Chandra Bose’s Rani of Jhansi Regiment of the Azad Hind Fauj (Indian National Army).
