Bhubaneswar: For the first time Odisha Police on Saturday hoisted the national flag at 10 uninhabited islands on the Odisha coast on the eve of Republic Day celebrations on Sunday.

During the All India Security Conference here in November last year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had directed that the National Flag be hoisted on uninhabited islands in coastal states on or before Republic Day.

The idea conceived by the Prime Minister was to showcase India’s pride and sovereignty in uninhabited islands and Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi took immediate steps towards fulfilling the Prime Minister’s dream by identifying 10 coastal islands of Odisha for this historic event.

The Chief Minister had directed DGP Yogesh Bahadur Khurania accordingly. The islands where the flags were hoisted are Subarna island in Balasore district, Naya Tapu island in Bhadrak district, Udabali, Kanika, Long Wheeler, Short Island, Small Wheeler in Bhadrak district and Boitarkud, Jatadhari Tanda and Boitarkuda island in Jagatsinghpur district. The Maritime Police Station of Odisha Police surveyed these islands, a release from Police Headquarters said.
