Jajpur, Mar 29: In a major development, the person, Jajpur police had detained yesterday suspecting him to be the father of the newborn baby girl, ‘Dharitri’, was arrested yesterday itself. The police arrested him on grounds of some major information and confessions. Identified as Ramesh Basantia, the accused father has he confessed of his crime during the police interrogation.

Jajpur Superintendent of Police Anup Sahoo informed media that during interrogation it was found out that the parents of the newborn already had four kids and so they first tried to abort ‘Dharitiri’ but upon failing to do so, they buried her alive in a manure heap on Mar 25. To god’s grace, she was rescued by group of locals in a critical state and was admitted to a Community Health Centre (CHC) and was later shifted to the DHH. In the meantime, this brutal incident raised several eyebrows of child welfare organisations and child rights activists over the increase in discrimination against girls and female infanticide cases.
