Dhenkanal, Feb 8: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued notices to the State Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police and calling for report in four weeks over the rapes and murders in the last week of January.
The DIG (Investigation) of the Commission has been directed to get the facts collected over telephone and put up separately within 3 days.
Supreme Court Lawyer and Rights Activist Radhakanta Tripathy had drawan drew the attention of the apex human rights Panel over the heinous crimes continuing in the district in the past few days.
Notably, on January 24, a 10-year-old girl was raped and murdered in the district. The gruesome incident, which came to light yesterday, has created resentment among the locals at Maluagoda village in Baruan Panchayat under Bhuban block in the district, Tripathy alleged.
Again on Jan 31, Unable to bear the ignominy, a rape victim allegedly committed suicide by setting herself on fire at Bhagbanpur under Town police station area.
Alleging that crime control measures in the district has failed, Tripathy requested the NHRC to investigate the case independently and direct the State to take action against the culprits, take steps to Prevent such crimes in future and compensate the family members of the deceased.
