Odisha CM directs for timely distribution of free laptops

Bhubaneswar, Dec 03: Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik directed officials to ensure timely distribution of laptops to Plus Two students as well as scholarships to meritorious students.

The laptop scheme of the State Government had been revived in September this year and it was targeted that 15000 computers would be given to eligible students across the districts.

“The laptop distribution by the OCAC should be completed before January-end. The process for handing over the computers to meritorious Plus Two students for 2016 should begin in June,” a release quoting the Chief Minister said.

Under the scheme, which was launched in 2014, 14, 750 students had got laptops in 2014. The left out would receive their computers soon, the officials reported to the CM.

Five categories of scholarships are being provided to 24,544 students this year. Scholarships to the tune of Rs 49.36 crore were given in 2014-15, while by November, 2015, Rs 18.20 crore has already been disbursed.

The CM also reviewed progress of model degree colleges being established in eight districts of Nabarangpur, Nuapada, Boudh, Rayagada, Sonepur, Deogarh, Malkangiri and Nayagarh at a cost of Rs 12 crore. The officials informed that construction work of five colleges would be completed by June next year.

Higher Education Minister Pradip Panigrahy, IT Minister Pranab Prakash Das, Chief Secretary AP Padhi and senior officials were present.
