Olive Ridleys reach Odisha River Mouth for mass nesting

Bhubaneswar: Feb 18: Olive Ridley turtles started coming to Rushikulya River Mouth, about 60km from Berhampur town in Ganjam district of Odisha since last few days. Usually, October to early summer in the period when these species arrive here for mass nesting. It is learnt that, around ten thousand turtles have laid their eggs on the beach. Berhampur Divisional Forest Officer Ashish Kumar Behera said, ‘these turtles will lay eggs for a week and this time, the number may reach 2.5 lacs.’

Olive Ridley turtles are best known for their behaviour of synchronized nesting in mass numbers. Interestingly, females return to the very same beach from where they first hatched, to lay their eggs.
