Bhubaneswar, Oct 6: In order to stop the Kuakhai river water pollution, a letter regarding to construct fence on the bridge over Kuakhai River will be written to the National Highway Authority (NHAI) by the Odisha State Pollution Control Board (OSPCB).
It was reported by green activists that even though the organizers directed to immerse idols into Temporary River, the organizers immersed idols in to the river. So that during the Durga Puja the Kuakhai gets polluted. As the fence build on the bridge has low height, people, standing on the bridge, can immerse idol easily. To prevent this, the height of the fence needs to be increased like the fence of Delhi’s Yamuna River. Last year it had requested NHAI to set up a fence on the river and the OSPCB will again request NHAI, OSPCB officials said.
The idol immersed in the river contains chemicals like chromium, cadmium, copper, lead and zinc which are harmful for both human and marine animals. As the chemicals remain concentrated they lead to possible threats, OSPCB officials said.
To hold an eco-friendly immersion process, a meeting had been held between the Pollution Control Board, Police, the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation authorities and Khurda Collectors.
As per the information, four temporary ponds have been made in the city by BMS for idol immersion this time. On the other side, no temporary ponds have not been constructed in Chandaka and Jatni which comes under the Khurda district administration. So OSPCB has directed the Khurda Administration to dig up temporary ponds.
Along with this, to create awareness among the organizer an awareness drive has also been initiated to convey them to immerse the idol in temporary pond and not in the rivers.
