Bhubaneswar, Jan 26: Even though cases of snatching, dacoity, land fraud and other petty crimes have risen in commissionerate police area in 2014-15, the silver lining is that heinous crimes like murder and rape have come down compared to the previous year.
Addessing a press meet on the annual crime assessment on Monday, twin city police commissioner RP Sharma said these petty crimes have posed a serious challenge for the police department.
He said 105 snatching cases were registered in 2014 while the number of such cases increased more than two-fold to 214 in 2015.
Similarly, the year 2014 witnessed 2055 theft cases while the figure went up to 2329 in 2015. The rate of accidents was also on the rise. As many as 271 deaths occurred in 822 mishaps in 2014 while there were 289 deaths in 925 accidents in 2015, Sharma added.
