Polavaram Issue: BJP Party declares Centre to bear Polavaram Project expenses

Bhubaneswar, Sept 8: On Wednesday, while announcing a special package for Andhra Pradesh, Arun Jaitley, the Union Finance Minister had said that, expenses of construction of the Polavaram project, which was declared as the national project on April 1, 2014, will be bored by the Centre. And also stated that the construction work will be carried out by Andhra Pradesh. The project is being constructed in Andhra Pradesh’s Godavari River.

After this announcement, Samir Dash, BJD spokesperson reacted on it and stating it as unfortunate said that the matter regarding Polavaram issue has being registered under the Supreme Court and a notice has also been issued to Center by the National Green Tribunal (NGT).

Defending the Centre’s decision Sajjan Sharma, BJP spokesperson, said that the Centre has not made any new announcement. As per the decision taken during the UPA regime at the Centre on creation Telengana, Andhra Pradesh was promised to get special status and the Polavaram project is part of the arrangement. He further added that the State government should make clear what kind of loss it would suffer and tell the same to the people of Odisha as well as the Centre.

It may be noted that, the project has being opposed by the both Odisha and Chhattisgarh government as it will put an adverse effect on both the states. Following which, alleging as illegal, a case had also been filed in the Supreme Court by the Odisha government.
