Berhampur, Aug 31: In different encounters in Ganjam district on Tuesday night, inter-state looter Deepak Mandal, who was involved in various loot and dacoit incidents in Golanthara area for the last one year, and his aide Astam Mandal were injured and admitted to the MKCG Medical College and Hospital here.
As per sources, Deepak opened fire at the police when he saw that he was being followed by them, while he was going on a motorcycle near Bhairavi under the Golanthara police limits. The police also cross fired at the looter. A pistol, two bullets and two looted motorcycles were seized by the police from his possession.
As per information from the police, besides Odisha, there are many cases which are pending against Deepak in West Bengal and Punjab. Deepak, who belongs from Murshidabad in West Bengal, has around 18 cases pending against him.
Similarly in another encounter, Police noticed Deepak’s aide Astam when he was going to the Pathara NH yesterday. Astam opened fire at the police who also cross fired in retaliation. However, police arrested Astam who sustained bullet injuries on both his legs. A pistol, three bullets and a motor cycle were seized by the police from his possession.
