Prayag chit fund scam: Bollywood’s link comes to fore; CBI investigates links in Odisha

Bhubaneswar, May 12: Bollywood’s link with chit fund scams is now in open as several actors from King Khan to Soha Ali Khan are found to have promoted Prayag group, the chit fund company that duped hundreds of investors in West Bengal. As per reports, Shahrukh Khan had endorsed Rs 1,000 crore for the film city project that was inaugurated over 2,700 acre in Chandrakona of West Midnapore on Apr 15, 2012. After busting the said chit fund scam in neighbouring West Bengal, the CBI is now conducting investigation to unearth the fraud company’s operation in several parts of Odisha. A senior CBI official has stated that focus of investigation would be identifying the role of influential people who have assisted the company in its investment plans. A complete inquiry on the entire financial transactions would also be done.

As per sources, the Prayag group had majorly planned to come with a film city in Balasore and the company had also requested for help from the State government to invest in fisheries and setting up of nurseries here. The company had a plan to have a nursery on 100 acres of land in Bhubaneswar and on the other hand, the land acquisition process for the film city project is almost completed.

Prayag group’s accused chairman, Basudeb Bagchi and director Avik Bagchi, his son are now lodged at Jharpara jail here upon their arrest based on allegations that they have duped Rs 1,900 crores from several investors in West Bengal. More than 150 FIRs against Prayag group have been filed by hundreds of depositors in Odisha.
