Queen Elizabeth II died at her summer home in Scotland, Balmoral Castle, said a statement from Buckingham Palace late on Thursday.

“The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon. The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow,” the Royal Family tweeted.

Even though she was sick, the 96-year-old Queen was busy until the end of her life. On Tuesday, she met with the new Prime Minister, Liz Truss.

After being instructed to rest, the Queen canceled a planned meeting with her senior political advisors on Wednesday. The day before, she met with outgoing Prime Minister Boris Johnson and his replacement, Liz Truss, at Balmoral, her Scottish Highlands hideaway.

The UK came together in June for the Platinum Jubilee celebrations to mark the Queen’s 70th year on the British throne. Prince Phillip, her husband, died last year at the age of 99, two months before he would have turned 100.

Queen Elizabeth’s recent celebrations of her Platinum Jubilee showed how popular she and the monarchy are.

Elizabeth is the oldest and longest-ruling monarch in British history. This year marked her 70th year on the throne. In September 2015, she became the longest-ruling monarch since Queen Victoria, who ruled for 63 years and 7 months.

The death of Queen Elizabeth II marks the end of an era not just for the people of Great Britain, but also for the people of the Commonwealth and the whole world, if you think about the standards and values she stood for.
