Cuttack, Nov 12: On Saturday the man who had attempted self-immolation on Nov 8 died while he was being treated of his burnt injuries at the SCB Medical College and hospital here.
Initially he had been admitted to the District Headquarters Hospital but as his condition was deteriorating he was shifted. He had made that attempt ahead of the Collectorate in Kendrapara. The name of the man was Niranjan Singh and he was 45 years old.
Alleging harassment by police he doused himself in flames by pouring Kerosene. Singh belonged to the Samagudia village on the outskirts of Kendrapara. To remember, the incident happened at around 10 am. It was that time when most of the staff at the Collectorate had gone to attend a meeting called by Chief Minister, Naveen Patnaik at Mahakalpada. A couple of persons present at Collectorate tried to save Singh who had suffered almost 70 per cent burns.
Ranjita Singh, wife of Niranjan said that the cops had arrested him regarding a land dispute case with an ulterior motive. The case was that some persons had illegally acquired their Indira Awas House in the village last month for which they had filed an FIR against the accused. The police instead of arresting the culprits, arrested Singh. From then the couple had made all efforts to get justice and bail out Singh. They had even submitted a petition to the Collector in his grievance cell regarding the same. But, the authorities did not pay any heed to it and nothing worked out. Frustrated Singh attempted immolation.
