‘SOA’ to launch ambitious project against Oral Cancer

Bhubaneswar, July 18: Focused on quality academics and research, the SOA University on Sunday announced the launching of an ambitious pan-Odisha project involving experts and health care workers to comprehensively address the scourge of oral cancer in the state.
“The project will be a part of the University’s corporate social responsibility involving identification of vulnerable groups, spread of awareness and advice on life style modification. It would also focus on implementation early diagnostic techniques and comprehensive treatment plan for the cancer-affected,” the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Amit Banerjee said while addressing the university’s Foundation Day celebrations.
“Special thrust would be directed towards development of molecular bio-markers in this fight against oral cancer,” he said adding oro-dental specialists, community medicine experts, nursing personnel, social workers, NGOs, scores of volunteers and a group of hard core researchers would be involved in the project.
The university, ranked as the 16th best in the country by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) of the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) recently, would also be launching five of its own international caliber peer reviewed journals covering the various disciplines under its domain, Prof. Banerjee announced.
The editorial board of these journals would be drawn from nationally as well as internationally acclaimed academicians in their respective fields, he said adding the journals would be on health care and life sciences, management sciences as well as hospitality and tourism management, legal studies, engineering and technology and agricultural sciences.
Prof. Banerjee congratulated the faculty members, researchers and students for their contribution towards the rise of the university saying SOA was today viewed as the country’s leading multidisciplinary Deemed to be University.
The function was addressed, among others, by the university’s Deputy Chairman Prof. B.K. Sarap, the Registrar, Prof. B.B. Pradhan and Deans.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Sarap recalled his experiences in the early days of the university while urging the faculty members and researchers to venture into new and innovative areas in research.
The university had been emphasizing a lot on research which had created a good perception, but the need was to put more thrust on innovative and cutting edge research, he said.
SOA University had set up the Center of Excellence in Theoretical and Mathematical Sciences with the objective of promoting research in frontier areas of science including High Energy Physics, Condensed Matter Physics and various branches of pure and applied mathematics. It is in the process of setting up a multidisciplinary Center for Bio-Medical Technology involving several of its institutions.
The university’s faculty of medicine, the Institute of Medical Sciences and Sum Hospital, extended health care to the people by deploying excellent modern and advanced diagnostic, surgical, life saving equipment and facilities at affordable cost. It is the only NABH and NABL accredited teaching hospital in the state.
