Bhubaneswar, Feb 6: The Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC) has sought an action-taken report (ATR) from Dhenkanal Collector-cum-District Magistrate over injury of a primary school student due to collapse of a school building in the district.

Acting on a petition filed by rights campaigner and Angul-based Human Rights Watch secretary Sangita Swain, the OHRC has asked the Collector to submit an ATR within four weeks.

The petitioner alleged that on November 28 last year, one Minu Behera sustained injuries as the Badasahi Higher Primary School building in Dhenkanal caved in on her.

“The School and Mass Education Department is responsible for the mishap. It violates human rights of the students. The incident occurred due to the inaction and unlawful action by the concerned public/school authorities,” the petitioner contended.

She prayed the commission to take necessary criminal/departmental/disciplinary proceedings against the responsible officials, besides ensuring a compensation of Rs 20 lakh to the victim.
