Sum hospital fire mishap; post mortem report reveals 19 people died due to asphyxiation

Bhubaneswar, Oct 23: After receiving post-mortem report of 19 persons who died at Sum hospital due to the fire breakout, Police commissioner YB Khurania on Saturday cleared that the deaths were due to asphyxiation and also informed that no burn mark has been found on the 19 dead bodies.

He informed this in a press conference held on Saturday and also said that the post mortem reports will further help for additional investigation in the fire mishap.

The post mortem of the 19 critical patients shifted from Sum Hospital had been conducted by the Capital Hospital authority.

As per the statement given by Dr Biswa Bhusan Patnaik, Director of Capital Hospital, the post mortem had been conducted by two doctors of the hospital-Dr Laxmikanta Behera and Dr Pratap Chandra Satpathy. The reason of the deaths has been mentioned in the report, he added.

Informing about the investigation in Sum Hospital fire breakout incident, Commissioner Khurania informed that police has interrogated dean of the hospital and vice-chancellor of Siksha ‘O’ Anusandhan University on Saturday to find out under what condition the patients died who were undergoing treatment at the hospital. During interrogation, police has got important information. Meanwhile police is trying to understand the organational structure of the hospital and how the decision had been taken related to the NOC of fire safety guidelines. The police is also giving importance to persons involved in the processing of files related to Fire safety.

On the other hand, Manoj Dash’s wife Saswati Dash, against whom the police has issued a lookout circular, has not yet appeared before police for interrogation.
