Tata Steel Meramandali bags CII-ITC Sustainability Awards

Tata steel Mermandali, bagged the CII-ITC Sustainability Awards 2021 for environmental excellence, a recognition for its sustainable practices and innovative interventions on the environmental front.

Sudhir Kumar Mehta, Chief, Shared Services, Tata Steel Meramandali, received the award at the 16th CII-ITC Sustainability Awards 2021 virtual event held on January 31, 2022.

Rao Inderjit Singh, MP, Union Minister of State (Independent Charges), Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation; Ministry of Planning and Ministry of Corporate Affairs, Government of India chaired the event along with delegates from various companies and other dignitaries.

Thanking the organizers for the honour Mehta said, “We are extremely happy and honoured to be recognized for this outstanding achievement in corporate excellence for our plants located in Meramandali in Odisha, Khopoli in Maharashtra, Sahibabad in UP an Hosur in Tamil Nadu.

As a responsible corporate, we are always committed to sustainable practices and this recognition will motivate our team to scale newer heights in the future for a greener tomorrow and long-term value creation.”

Sustainability and energy conservation being at the core of operations at Tata Steel Meramandali, many such interventions have been made including installation of Coke Dry Quenching (CDQ) System, one of the most renowned energy-efficient and environmentally-friendly facilities within steel production, a 250 TPH (Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons) gas-fired boiler to increase green power, a substantial increase in scrap charging in steel melting shops and a reduction of specific coal consumption in DRI (Direct Reduced Iron), etc. It has also increased clean power generation to 86% in FY 21 from 40% in FY 19.
