Kalinganagar, Mar 10: A total of 811 scheduled caste/scheduled tribe students from different schools and colleges located in Bamnipal and Sukinda area here were awarded Tata Steel Jyoti Fellowships in a function organised here on Thursday. Along with cash awards, the class Viii students were also provided with convertible bags to carry books as well as use it as a small desk along with solar lamp and tablets to 15 toppers among them. The total amount disbursed under the fellowship was Rs 48.35 lakh. Last year, 360 students from Kalinganagar, 228 from Sukinda and 255 from Bamnipal were also awarded fellowships amounting to Rs 47.36 lakh. Certificates of merit were also given to students up to Class X on the occasion.
To support the education of underprivileged scheduled caste (SC) and scheduled tribe (ST) students, Tribal Cultural Society (TCS), a society promoted by Tata Steel, awards Jyoti Fellowships to meritorious SC/ST students every year. Krushna Chandra Nayak, district education officer (DEO), Jajpur extended a thankful note to the Tata Steel for motivating SC/ST students from Danagadi, Sukinda and Harichandanpur blocks through Jyoti Fellowship. He was also impressed with the programmes of Tata Steel for students of backward sections of the society.
