Berhampur, Jan 18; Three persons were killed after a gas tanker lost control and overturned near Chhattrapur College Square here on Sunday.
Eyewitnesses said, the tanker driver lost control while trying to save a scooter rider with a scooter and rammed into a nearby betel shop.
Three persons standing nearby were crushed under the tanker and died on the spot, eyewitnesses said.
The tanker was on its way to Bhubaneswar from Berhampur, locals said.
Police rushed to the spot and restricted movement of vehicles through the route as gas was leaking from the tanker. Power supply was also cut in the locality to avoid any fire accident due to the leakage of gas.
Locals were asked not to light stoves, sources said.
Berhampur fire tendors reached the spot and sprayed water to control LPG leakage.
Ganjam Collector Prem Chandra Choudhury, who was monitoring the situation, said, “We have talked to the HP Gas and a technical team of the company is coming from Jatni and their equipment from Vizag. Therefore, the evacuation process may take some time.”
