Rourkela, June 8: Balaram Champatiray, the chief security officer (CSO) of National Institute of Technology (NIT), Rourkela, moved to the Odisha High Court claiming for anticipatory bail. Balaram has been accused of sexually exploiting his female subordinate colleague. Being allegedly accused by at least eight female security guards working under him, he had been suspended by the institute authorities.
A fact-finding committee with the NIT director as the head submitted its report in the same day. This report was forwarded by the institute’s director, Sunil Sarangi, to the standing committee of the institute. The accused has been on the run since May 28 when the first FIR was filed against him at the Sector 3 Police Station. DSP P.K. Mishra reported to the media persons that in all five police teams were made in charge to spot for Champatiray. As a revolt to this misbehavior, the NIT students had resorted to dharna on May 25 demanding the arrest of the accusatory thus creating an awareness about the incident. The student had shown photographs and illicit video of Champatiray’s exploits to the media persons. However, students withdrew their dharna on June 2 after closed-door meeting between the students and NIT authorities.
The same day, Rajesh Singh Solanki, under secretary in the Union Human Resource Development Ministry visited Rourkela for conducting an inquiry in connection with the NIT issue. There Solanki had called for meeting with the students, faculty members, the fact-finding committee and the institute’s director on this probing issue.
