Unitech MD Sanjay Chandra and brother Ajay arrested on fraud charges in New Delhi; forwarded to Delhi court today

New Delhi, Apr 1: Today in the wee hours of Saturday, the Economic Offense Wing of the Police here took into custody Unitech promoter and MD, Sanjay Chandra and his brother Ajay Chandra. At round 2 pm today, both the promoters of the real estate giant will be made to appear at the Patiala House of court here. Earlier upon the complaint filed by home buyers, the police had filed an FIR against Chandra. The complaint stated that the buyers who had purchased flats in Chandra’s residential project in Greater Noida had been deceived by Chandra. The duped buyers also complained that real estate company had neither completed the project in time nor refunded the money back to them with interest. Allegations are also against Chandra that he divested the buyers’ money into foreign accounts to set up a shell company in abroad. As per the information with the cops, around 91 people invested Rs 35 crores in purchasing flats but did not get them. A senior PS has stated to the media that the investigation of this incident is being taken care off by the trial court. The investors had also approached the Delhi Court for the same.

In January, in an another case filed by chartered accountant Sanjay Kalra and his business partner Devesh Wadhwa, the court had demanded a 1-day judicial custody of Chandra along with the other promoters of Unitech including Unitech Ltd chairman, Ramesha Chandra, MD Ajay Chandra and director Minoti Bahri on charges of cheating following which, he had to spend a night in the Tihar Jail before getting an interim bail. Both Kalra and Wadhwa had booked a land in Habitat Apartments in Greater Noida that was developed by Unitech. The project had been postponed. However, the company alleged that Unitech refused to refund the amount upon the project getting delayed although it promised to refund along with 11% interest pa.
