Up-gradation of Blast Furnace – 1 of Rourkela Steel Plant enters a new phase

Rourkela, Feb 12: The project work of Upgradation of Blast Furnace-1 of Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) has entered a new phase with the commencement of laying of Carbon Blocks.

 The Carbon Block laying was started in the presence of Ashwini Kumar, ED (Works), Subhendra Das, ED (Projects), PK Das, GM (Blast Furnace), Sunil Kumar, GM (Projects), AK Jha, GM, CET (Rourkela Sub Centre) and many other Senior Officers of the plant on February 9.

           With the commencement of laying of Carbon Blocks, the most sophisticated and major activity of the furnace has started.

 Refractory, being the major component of a Blast Furnace has a very big role to play and the carbon blocks among these are to be laid with supreme precision and extreme care.

 The Blast Furnace -1, named as Parvati, is being rebuilt with state of the art technology and will be equipped with all the modern facilities.

 It is worth mentioning here that this furnace is being rebuilt with an enhanced capacity of average 2900 Tonnes of Hot Metal per day and annual capacity of approximately 1Million Tonne.

 The new facilities of the Blast Furnace include Twin tap hole flat cast house, new modern day mushroom head stove with waste gas heat recovery system, new single tower scrubber for gas cleaning, new more efficient cyclonic dust catcher, soft water based cooling system with new pump house and 1250 metre cube Emergency high level tank and enhanced skip system with new modern day skip and winch house.

 The total cost of the project is Rs. 684 Crore and it will increase the useful volume of Blast Furnace-1 from 1139 Cubic Metre to 1700 Cubic Metre.
