Villagers protest culling process; demands compensation in Keranga in Khurda district, Odisha

Khurda; Dec 27: Demanding demolition of poultry firm located on the village outskirt, the villagers of Keranga village protested the culling process directed by the district collector to neutralize the bird flu from the area. They also demanded compensation for the same.

After the establishment of the poultry firm, the virus got injected into the village. So, the villagers claimed that, at first the firm’s birds should be culled. They should be compensated for culling their birds by the administration or else culling process would not be allowed in the village, villagers further stated. Following the protest, the rapid response teams could not kill any bird.

No plan has been made to cull the firms’ chicken as the firms are not in range of 1km radius. Four years ago, the virus was detected in the village and post four years, the virus has again been detected in the village.  2000 birds would be culled in the infected place as decided, Bishnupada Sethy, Secretary of Animal Resource informed.

It may be noted that, earlier after the detection of bird flu in the area, 10 rapid response teams had started the culling operation of chickens at Keranga village today morning.
