Virat Kohli conferred with the Padma Shri by President at Rashtrapati Bhawan in New Delhi

New Delhi, Apr 1: On Thursday, God had in true sense showered blessings upon Indian cricket skipper and the new captain of the Indian cricket team, Virat Kohli as he was awarded the Padma Shri by the President, Shri Pranab Mukherjee at the Rashtrapati Bhawan here. Along with him, Hockey captain, PR Sreejesh and Paralympian, Deepa Malik were also honoured with the Padma Shri handed over the President.

Besides Kohli, Sreejesh and Malik, five other sportspersons were named for the prestigious Padma Shri when the honours list was declared on the Republic Day on Jan 26. The list had names such as Rio Olympics bronze medal winner wrestler Sakshi Malik, gymnast Dipa Karmakar, Paralympian Mariyappan Thangavelu, discus thrower Vikas Gowda and blind cricket team captain Shekhar Naik.

On the occassion, dignities present were vice-president Mohammed Hamid Ansari, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan and Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh.
Kohli in his captaincy period has made the team win successive Test series at home except the fourth and deciding series with Australia in Dharamsala recently because of his injury. Ajinkya Rahane had led India to a 2-1 series win in Kohli’s absence.
