Bhubaneswar, Aug 20:  Today morning the doctors at the Balasore District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) started to protest against the assault on a senior doctor at the hospital yesterday thus calling off their cease work agitation hours. The medical experts called off their stir when District Collector, Pramod Kumar Das intervened in the matter and assured them to fulfill their demand for security to the doctors. The Additional SP and the Chief District Medical Officer (CDMO) were also present at the meeting held at the Collector’s residential office.

Yesterday, a medical specialist doctor, Bharat Samal at the DHH in Balasore was admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) after being attacked by the kin of a patient alleging medical negligence. He had succumbed to head injuries during the attack. The aggrieved member of the patient alleged ill-treatment by the hospital authorities and attacked the doctor inside the hospital campus. On the other hand the doctors rejected such a claim.

Notably, Krishna Dey of Balgopalpur in Remuna area was admitted to the hospital in serious condition. Dr Samal, who was on emergency duty, referred him to the SCB Medical College and Hospital, Cuttack. However, the patient died soon thereafter. Angered over this, his family members beat up the doctor with an iron rod, following which Dr Samal sustained head injuries. Protesting against such vandalism, medical experts had resorted to cease-work stir demanding security this morning. Meanwhile, police have started investigation into the matter and detained the father of the patient.
