Berhampur: Waterman Dr. Rajendra Singh has said that the protection of the sea coast is closely linked to the health of rivers.

“Without a long-term plan combining our traditional knowledge and skills with science and technology, the protection of rivers and sea coasts will not be possible,” he said inaugurating the 25th session of the Odisha Environment Congress at Berhampur University.

The three-day conference is being held on environment and coastal issues.

Dr. P. Chandramohan, an oceanographer from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Goa, delivered the keynote address at the ceremony.

The Odisha coast is one of the most beautiful and naturally rich in India. But climate change is gradually threatening it, he said that more research is needed for coordinated and planned coastal protection.

As one of the speakers, Soumya Dutt, National President of Greenpeace, said that in the face of climate change, the people living on the coast, especially those who earn their living by fishing, will be the most affected.

Therefore, he called on everyone to be vigilant from now on.

Eminent environmentalist and Green Nobel laureate Prafulla Samanthara joined as one of the speakers and said that the world is currently facing two deep problems. That is, climate change and the terrible inequality among humans. The capitalist system is the father of both these problems.

In the afternoon, two technical sessions on “Coastal Environment and Biodiversity” and “Coastal Natural Resources and Economy” were held.
