Berhampur, Nov 28: A newly married women allegedly hung herself to death on Sunday after her in-laws refused to accept scrapped notes as dowry.
The situation took place under Golanthara Police limits in Ganjam district of Odisha when the victim Prabhasini Daughter of Shiba Mandal of Rangipur Badasahi village and Laxmi Nahak of the same village who were in love tied the knot with the consent of their families on November 9, the very next day PM announced the scrapping of 500 and 1000 notes.
But the groom’s family rejected the Rs 1,70,000 dowry money of scrapped notes offered by Prabhasini’s family in presence of all relatives and guests demanding for new notes. Prabhasini’s father requested for some time to exchange the notes, but failed to do so.
The situation in came into light when in-laws informed the victims family about Prabhasini’s suicide by tying a dhoti to her neck at around 2.30 pm. Prabhasini’s body was laying low on the ground when the family reached at the in-laws residence.
Prabhasini’s father has filed a complaint of dowry torture and killing at the Golanthara PS, after hearing about the doubts of a murder from nearby circumstances.
Prabhasini’s body was recovered and the investigation is on.
